It is official – Dean Smith is Aston Villa’s new manager, but the fans will have to wait over a week before they get to see what the new man has to bring to the fore after a disappointing start to the season.
Despite some top quality signings – with the likes of Yannick Bolasie and John McGinn arriving at Villa Park – the club have not hit anywhere near the heights that were expected, and it was their failure to mount an early push for a top six spot which eventually to led to Steve Bruce being axed.
Now the baton has been handed to Smith, and while some Villa supporters might know a little about what he has to offer after his time with Brentford, the likelihood is many will not have been paying him too much attention.
However, the fans can begin to get quite excited, for he is set to have Villa Park bouncing with his exciting brand of football which will no doubt see two men at the very forefront of his plans.
In an in depth analysis of Smith’s time with the Bees by Sky Sports, the revelation was made that since the start of last season, Brentford had made over 2000 more passes than Villa, many of which were short passes, and that there were less crosses but more shots, as well as more possession.
It goes to show that the Bees were heavily reliant on their midfield under Smith, which bodes well for Villa duo John McGinn and Jack Grealish, who look set to dazzle under their new manager and his tactics.
The pair are already recognised as two of the best midfield options in the Championship but were let down by Bruce’s approach, and now with a new man in the dugout they will have Villa Park bouncing in no time.
Their creative abilities will be allowed to flourish and they should thrive under their manager’s leadership, with plenty of responsibility set to be placed on their shoulders.
It could well be Smith was chosen with the duo, as well as a couple of others, in mind, and it looks like a match made in heaven.
