Tottenham played their part in a very exciting game in the Champions League on Wednesday night, but BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand thinks that they’ve gone backwards from last season and need to sign some new blood.

They came up short in the Champions League again after losing their opening game to Inter Milan 2-1, going down in a thrilling 4-2 defeat against Barcelona.

They’re off the pace in the Premier League as well, four points behind Man City and Liverpool at the top of the table, although the weekend’s fixtures give them a great chance of making some ground up.

Tottenham play Cardiff at home while league leaders Man City play second-placed Liverpool.

Talking on the BT Sports coverage of the game (Wednesday, BT Sports 2, 7pm), Ferdinand said that Tottenham have a real problem that stems from not signing anyone this summer.

“The best teams are always evolving and progressing, and keeping things fresh, and Tottenham didn’t buy anyone over the summer.

“What they need is someone who can get their head on the end of set pieces and cause trouble in the box.”

OPINION

You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t think that Tottenham need to buy someone in January – unless it’s an Arsenal supporter. Staying in the same place is never enough in a football world where your rivals are constantly making moves and improving their squads. Tottenham still have a good squad but it’s hard to argue against Liverpool and Man City being one step above them now. Rio Ferdinand thinks they need someone who can come in and provide some strength and support for Harry Kane. Spurs have a wonderful array of attacking players but, Kane aside, they don’t have anyone with real strength in the opposition’s penalty area. Spurs fans will not be happy if the January window passes without any signings and it will be hard for Pochettino to say that he can’t improve the current squad again.
