Mallik Wilks is on the verge of signing a new Leeds United contract according to Doncaster manager Grant McCann.

The striker, who is currently out on loan until January, has impressed at the League One club.

McCann was asked whether he would try to extend his loan period and said, as quoted in the Shields Gazette, “Yes – definitely. But, again, there’s different things that we have to go through. Both Mallik and Herbie [Kane] are in the middle of sorting out new deals with their parent clubs.”

Wilks’ current contract is due to expire at the end of the season.

OPINION

Wilks’ loan spell at League One Doncaster has been going really well. He’s played in all 14 of their league games so far and scored five goals across all competitions. He was on the scoresheet again at the weekend and it looks like his displays have won him a new contract at his parent club. That will be a huge boost for the 19-year-old striker who will be looking to force his way into the first-team under Bielsa when he returns to Elland Road. That might be in January but it sounds like McCann wants to hold onto him for the rest of the season. That could well be the best option for the player who will struggle to make an impact under Bielsa this season. The Leeds manager likes to stick with a trusted group of players and he has a number of attacking options, with Patrick Bamford set to return in the new year.
