Aston Villa caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald has provided an update on the injury suffered by midfielder John McGinn against Millwall on Saturday.

The 5ft 10in Scotland international [Source: Transfermarkt] went off in the second half of the team’s 2-1 loss to the Lions, capping a miserable day at the office for the Villans.

And MacDonald has spoken about the injury: “He has done his ankle,” he told the Express & Star. “I am not sure how badly. It’s quite swollen.

“I would like to say he will go with Scotland and be OK. But the most important thing for this club is that he is fit to play the next game.”

OPINION

It doesn’t sound like a particularly promising update, does it? MacDonald clearly isn’t sure about the extent of the injury, although it can’t be too bad if McGinn is still going away on Scotland duty. The worry for Villa fans will be that he gets overused on international duty and ends up aggravating his ankle, something that he would have been able to avoid if he was able to stay in Birmingham over the next week or so instead. However, he has received the call from his country so we’ll just have to wait and see how his ankle reacts to any football he might play over the international break. If the club were to lose him for any length of time it would be devastating. He’s been such an important player for the team since joining from Hibernian this summer, and whoever the new manager is would be loath to lose him. He’s a terrific player who has taken to Championship football like a duck to water so let’s hope the star Villa man of the first two months of the season gets back fit soon.
