A section of Celtic fans have tore Callum McGregor to shreds for his performance in the 3-0 win against Hearts in the BetFred Cup semi-final at Murrayfield on Sunday.

The Hoops may have booked their place in the final against either Rangers or Aberdeen, but McGregor, 25, failed to impress after he was switched to the centre of midfield early on when Scott Sinclair came on to replace the injured Eboue Kouassi.

Some Celtic fans were furious with the Scotland international for his display, with one saying that the club needs to “get rid of him”, while another blasted him for a “garbage” outing.

COMMENTARY:

McGregor’s form has taken a dip lately but he has not put in a performance this poor for a long, long time so it is no surprise to see so many Celtic fans slamming him for his display against Hearts. Brendan Rodgers’ squad is becoming more and more stretched due to injuries and it just goes to show that it was a mistake to offload Stuart Armstrong in the summer without reinvesting in that central midfield position. Kouassi’s injury in the first-half meant that McGregor had to move to that position, when he has done a lot better out on the left wing lately. These Celtic fans have not been forgiving of the midfielder at all though and their comments on social media just show how poorly he played. Calls to “get rid” of the 25-year-old are a bit extreme because he has been one of the better performers this season, but he does need to improve on this outing against Dundee on Wednesday.
