Former Derby striker Darren Bent ripped into Liam Bridcutt on Tuesday night after the Nottingham Forest midfielder gave away a penalty in the 3-2 loss against Burton at the Pirelli Stadium.

Bridcutt brought down Jamie Allen in the first-half of the Carabao Cup clash, but luckily for him, Liam Boyce blasted the resulting spot-kick over the bar and into the Forest supporters behind the goal.

Bent was not impressed by the former Leeds enforcer, claiming that it was an awful decision him to go to ground inside his own penalty box.

“It’s a silly tackle. You know not to go to ground in the box, especially in that position,” said Bent at half-time during Sky Sports’ live coverage of the game on Tuesday night.

“There’s a little bit of danger but to throw himself down so recklessly like that, for an experienced player… he knows straight away, his reaction tells it all.

“It was a terrible decision by himself.”

OPINION

Bridcutt has been key to Nottingham Forest in their Carabao Cup run, but you can see why Aitor Karanka does not play him in the league because at times the two-times Scotland international can be a bit of a liability. So far this season, the 29-year-old has played just four times for Forest across all competitions, with just one of those outings coming in the Championship when he played for a grand total of one minute against Rotherham in September. Was his mistake in Burton simply a case of him being rusty? It’s hard for players to play well when they have had such a long period between games. Bridcutt is not an awful player but he might not have given away that penalty if he had been playing regularly for the Reds. Either way, Karanka will be dropping him out of his side for upcoming games and Claudio Yacob may have moved ahead of him in the pecking order.
