A section of Aston Villa fans have been drooling over the possibility of re-signing Barry Bannan in January after it was reported that Dean Smith is planning to buy the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder.

According to the Mirror, Villa are plotting an £8million swoop for the 28-year-old with Smith looking to make him his first signing at Villa Park.

Some supporters are loving the idea of welcoming the left-footed playmaker back to the West Midlands, with one saying that he would be an “excellent signing”.

COMMENTARY:

Bannan would definitely be a solid signing for Aston Villa and for £8million they would be getting themselves a proven Championship player who knows the club and could play a key role in a push for promotion. While these fans are loving the idea of re-signing the Scotland international, does Smith really need him? John McGinn is very similar to Bannan except he scores goals and supplies assists as well as dictating tempo and having a major impact on games. It is always enticing to talk about a return for a former player and maybe these Villa fans are getting dragged into that because they don’t need him at all. Smith would be wasting money on the Owls ace and he should try to plow all of his January budget into his defence. Villa have just two centre-backs, one left-back and very poor goalkeepers. That is where the money should be spent.
