Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Scott Arfield is 50-50 for Rangers’ Europa League clash against Spartak Moscow at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Arfield, 29, picked up a hamstring injury while on international duty with Canada and missed Sunday’s 4-1 win at Hamilton.

However there is a chance that the Gers first teamer could return to action on Thursday along with Ryan Jack and Borna Barisic, who are also available after recent injuries.

“We should have Barisic available and the decision on whether he is in the squad will come down to whether he is ready in terms of training minutes to be involved,” said Gerrard, as quoted on Rangers’ official website.

“Ryan Jack is available, and Scott Arfield is touch and go, 50-50.”

OPINION

Having Arfield back would be a massive boost for Rangers but they should get by without him. The £25,000-a-week [Football Insider] summer signing has had a mixed start to life at Ibrox with the fanbase seeming divided on whether or not he is one of their best midfielders. Regardless, Gerrard clearly sees him as a key player having handed him 16 appearances across all competitions this season. The Canada international has played in both of the club’s Europa League group stages games so far and if he is fit, you can expect to see him in the starting line-up. However even though Gerrard says that Arfield could play, it would be a bit of a risk to have him return from injury in such an important game. Lassana Coulibaly, Ovie Ejaria and Ross McCrorie are more than likely going to be the three central midfielders used against Spartak this week.
