Sam Allardyce has confirmed that he would go into talks with Aston Villa if they approached him about succeeding Steve Bruce in the West Midlands.

Villa sacked Bruce last Wednesday and are yet to close down on a replacement for the ex-Birmingham boss.

Former England boss Allardyce, who was sacked by Everton in May, admits that he would not be overly keen on taking charge at Villa Park, however if they showed any kind of interest in him, then he would consider it.

“I’m not too sure if I would fancy the Villa job at the moment,” the experienced former Premier League manager said, as quoted by Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast’s official Twitter account on Wednesday morning.

“I suppose if there was any contact I would talk to them.”

OPINION

Why would Aston Villa approach Allardyce after he says that? Why admit that you wouldn’t fancy the job and then say that they could make contact with you? Allardyce was probably asked the question and gave the answer that everyone wanted to hear while adding a bit of truth in there but still, it’s a weird thing to say for a manager who must be eager to get back in the game. Allardyce would be a horrible appointed for Villa though and would basically be a worse version of Bruce. He is a local bloke and has a lot of experience in the Championship, but his style of football and attitude is that of a dinosaur and Villa should keep a wide berth. The 63-year-old would probably be a better appointment than someone like Thierry Henry or John Terry though, but there are still better options out there like Brendan Rodgers or Dean Smith, if Villa can lure then away from Celtic and Brentford.
