West Brom are set to sign playmaker Wes Hoolahan after he arrived at the club’s training headquarters, according to Football Insider.

The reliable site claim the Championship big hitters have invited the playmaker, 36, for a trial and manager Darren Moore will run the rule over him at close quarters over the coming days.

Football Insider report West Brom are eager to add more attacking reinforcements after failing in a loan deadline day swoop for Blackburn Rovers ace Bradley Dack and are primed to hand Hoolahan a short-term contract.

Good move for West Brom?

Yes, if Hoolahan is fit and motivated. The Norwich legend is at the veteran stage of his career after his 10-year spell at the club came to an end this summer. But he showed last season for the Canaries he can still influence Championship matches and his record in the division is outstanding. In 351 Norwich matches – made of which were in the Premier League – Hoolahan scored 54 goals and supplied 78 assists. A playmaker who can operate on both flanks as well as in his favoured central role, he also has 43 Republic of Ireland caps. If Hoolahan has the legs and desire, he could do a fine job for the Baggies as they pursue instant promotion.

Likely to happen?

Given that Hoolahan is already undergoing a West Brom trial, this is a deal that does not look too complicated. The proven performer is bound to have other offers on the table, but the Baggies are primed to win his signature on what would be a free transfer.
