Tottenham target Frenkie de Jong will be sold by Ajax next summer for a fee of £66.8million, according to Spanish journalist Oriol Domenech.

The reporter, who has been quoted by the official Twitter account of Spanish magazine Club de la Mitjanit, claims that Barcelona offered up to £26.7million for de Jong, 21, this summer, while Spurs have also recently bid £44.5million for the Netherlands international.

It is understood that Dutch giants Ajax will ready to cash in on de Jong in the summer of 2019, but only for a £66.8million fee that would exceed Tottenham’s current record transfer.

Good move for Tottenham?

De Jong is a quality young talent and is bound to be one of Holland’s key players in the future.

He has earned his two first caps for the Netherlands during the current international break and gave a good account of himself in clashes with Peru and France.

Moving to the Premier League is a massive step up from the Eredivisie, but Spurs have a strong contingent of ex-Ajax players who have proved that there is something about the North London club that gets them to tick.

It would cost a lot of money but Spurs fans should be very happy if Mauricio Pochettino is able to buy de Jong next summer.

Likely to happen?

Spurs have so far outbid Barcelona as they aim to sign de Jong, but the price-tag that Ajax are demanding for the deep-lying playmaker is bound to exceed what Daniel Levy is willing to spend on the Dutch ace.

Barca would surely win the race to sign the midfielder as they might not only be more willing to splash the transfer fee that Ajax want, but could also tempt him with more regular silverware and higher wages.
