BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton laid into Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos after a comfortable 4-0 win in the quarter-final of the Scottish Cup.

It was an easy win for Rangers at Ibrox in front of deliriously happy fans, but Sutton wasn’t ready to let Morelos off the hook after a yellow card that means he’ll miss the semi-final against Aberdeen.

One fan said that Sutton had a “strong opinion about an incident he didn’t see”.

But, as Sutton said in his Tweet, Morelos got booked for dissent and that means he “would have said something and now misses semi-final with Lafferty already missing”.

He went on to say that “Steven Gerrard has shown great faith in him and he has let him down now on more than one occasion”.

He finished off his tweet by saying that it was really “poor” on the part of Morelos.

OPINION

It’s too easy to say that some players are just like that and accept card after card, and suspension after suspension. Gerrard needs to be able to rely on his players and Sutton is right when he says that Morelos has let him down too many times. Morelos has already picked up four yellow cards this season and has been sent off once. This isn’t a coincidence and he’s had 17 cards in just 57 games and been sent off twice for Rangers which is totally unacceptable. Morelos is a superbly talented striker and he seems to be getting better and better under Gerrard. But his discipline, or lack of it, is a problem and Gerrard doesn’t seem to have been able to make any impact on it yet. He’ll have to take him to one side and tell him that while he’s got the world at his feet, he’s in danger of making a name for himself as a hothead. And he could point to Mario Balotelli as a good example of how a career can be derailed through lack of discipline. Hopefully he can learn to keep a lid on things in the future, but he’s made the Scottish Cup semi-final and Gerrard’s first trophy that much harder now.
