Chris Sutton hailed Leigh Griffiths as “the man” and said that Celtic deserved to go through to the semi-final in their Scottish Cup game against St Johnstone on Wednesday night.

It was a nervy game though for the fans who had to wait until the 83rd minute for the goal.

Defender Dedryck Boyata then got sent off to give the supporters one final sweat before the final whistle.

However, Celtic do progress to the semi-final, along with rivals Rangers who enjoyed a much easier night, winning 4-0 at home to Ayr.

Sutton gave his half-time verdict, bemoaning two “huge” misses for Griffiths and Callum McGrgeor.

But Griffiths came good in the end once more and secured his side the result that takes some pressure off his side and Brendan Rodgers.

In the semi-final draw, Celtic drew Hearts and Rangers got Aberdeen, leaving open the possibility of an absolutely blockbuster Old Firm final.

OPINION

Neutrals will have been happy to see Celtic win this one tonight and will be praying both sides win their semi-finals. This season is turning into an absolutely fascinating Old Firm battle and while Celtic drew first blood, there’s a long way to go until the war is won. Rangers will be desperate to win a trophy, any trophy, this season, and Celtic will be determined to stop them and keep up their domestic dominance. An Old Firm final is no foregone conclusion though, with two mouth-watering semi-finals to play, with the next two best teams in Scotland Hearts and Aberdeen standing between the two bitter rivals. Hearts in particular are having a marvellous season and are currently top of the league. They’ll find it insulting that we’re already licking our lips at the prospect of Rodgers v Gerrard in the final. But can they really blame us?
