Chris Sutton has claimed that Celtic are facing a must-win tie against St Johnstone in their BetFred Cup quarter final clash on Wednesday night.

The Hoops travel to McDiarmid Park having lost 2-1 at Kilmarnock on Sunday and if Brendan Rodgers wants to preserve his record of winning every domestic honour in Scotland since his arrival at Celtic Park, then he has to avoid defeat in Perth.

Sutton is fully aware of how big a game it is for his former club, but admits that the Hoops are not going into the game in the best of shape.

“We go again tonight in the Betfred Cup. Double treble winners Celtic not in great form need a win at plucky St Johnstone. Huge quarter final tie,” he said via his personal Twitter account on Wednesday.

OPINION

A lot of people will be looking at this game as one that Celtic could lose after their defeat to Killie on Sunday and their uninspired 1-0 Europa League win over Rosenborg last week. St Johnstone held the Hoops to two draws last season and Tommy Wright certainly sets his team up well, but there is no way that Rodgers’ side is going to lose this one. Celtic are still favourite to win a third domestic treble in a row and they should put that Rugby Park defeat to the back of their minds to get a comfortable win on Wednesday night. Rodgers will have his side back firing soon enough as they are just in a bit of a rut at the moment. The best way to get out of that rut is to be faced with a knock-out game like this one because the Bhoys have to win it to progress. If they don’t their season will already be a step backwards from the last two years as it cancels out on of the domestic trophies.
