Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor will face no retrospective action for his kick at Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer during Sunday’s Old Firm derby, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reports that the Scottish Football Association [SFA] has decided against punishing McGregor for the clash, after three former officials studied the flashpoint.

There was no unanimous agreement between the trio of ex referees, meaning that the Rangers shot-stopper passes the SFA’s disciplinary process.

The 36-year-old caught the Norwegian in the visitor’s penalty box at the weekend, but referee Willie Collum missed the incident.

OPINION

Celtic supporters will likely be pulling their hair out at this news. In their minds it was bad enough that McGregor wasn’t given his marching orders on Sunday, for him now to escape retrospective punishment must seem scarcely believable. The former Hull City ‘keeper appeared to clearly lash out at Ajer with his studs, yet it was missed by the referee on the day and deemed acceptable by the three former match officials working for the SFA. There needs to be unanimous agreement for the disciplinary process to move forward, so it could have been that just one of the officials thought he did nothing wrong. Even that is surprising, as McGregor’s wrongdoing looked clear as day at Parkhead. It’s a big boost for Gers boss Steven Gerrard, however, as McGregor is a top quality player. He performed superbly, kick aside, on Sunday, keeping the visitors in the game numerous times. He’ll now be able to continue that form after the international break.
