Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has heaped praise on young winger Glenn Middleton and central midfielder Andy Halliday.

Halliday produced a disciplined performance against Villarreal in the Europa League on Thursday, while Middleton did well off the bench in Spain.

And Boyd was delighted with both men: “He [Middleton] had an immediate impact against Osijek in the qualifiers and more than played his part in the second equaliser on Thursday,” he wrote in the Scottish Sun. “He’s a young boy with great talent. He’s doing the opposite to what the Celtic players are doing right now — he’s playing with a freedom and a smile on his face.

“Andy Halliday deserves a special mention too. Sometimes playing out of position, he’s fought hard for the cause. People like that are always underestimated. But guys like Halliday work tirelessly to allow that to happen,” he finished.

OPINION

It’s good to see an underrated player like Halliday receive praise from a former Rangers great like Boyd. He’s worked hard to remain at the club and has forced himself into Steven Gerrard’s plans through hard work and determination. He helped the Ibrox outfit to an impressive 2-2 draw against the Spanish giants on Thursday, while Middleton also played his part with a positive performance off the bench. It’s vital for Gerrard to have quality options from the substitute bench, and Middleton definitely gives him that. The 18-year-old is flourishing under the Liverpool legend’s leadership, and looks set for a big future at the club. Halliday and Middleton look set to form part of the Gerrard revolution in Glasgow for years to come, and Boyd is clearly excited to see what’s to come from them, and Rangers, in the coming months. Gers supporters should be equally thrilled with both men.
