Former Rangers manager Ally McCoist has said that his old team were well beaten by Celtic in Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Parkhead.

Steven Gerrard’s side were beaten 1-0 courtesy of Olivier Ntcham’s second half strike, and McCoist claims the visitors can have no complaints.

“The better team won by a proverbial mile,” he told talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. “I thought Celtic, particularly in the first half, dominated the game and Rangers didn’t lay a glove on Celtic in the first half.

“Second half was a little bit better, but the goalkeeper was man of the match and that probably tells you all you need to know. I think when they [Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister] take a step back and look at the performance they’ll probably appreciate they didn’t really deserve to get anything out of the game,” he said.

OPINION

It’s hard to disagree with McCoist’s take here. Celtic were the better team throughout on Sunday, and deserved to take all three points from the first Old Firm derby of the season. They won the midfield battle, and Rangers forwards Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty never really troubled the Celtic backline. You might’ve expected a former Gers manager like McCoist to come out in defence of the club following the game, but his honesty is refreshing. Gerrard didn’t think his team was too far off the Hoops, but in reality the gulf between the two sides looked as pronounced as ever at the weekend. Rangers need to reinforce their midfield, with a Scott Brown type of destroyer, as well as adding more creativity to the middle of the park. They are making progress under Gerrard, these are early days for the Liverpool legend of course, but there’s still some way to go for the Ibrox outfit.
