Chris Sutton mocked Rangers forward Kyle Lafferty for recently sharing that his side still believe they could win the league title.

TV presenter Darrell Currie brought up the senior player’s recent remarks when Sutton, John Hartson and Stephen Craigan were discussing Rangers on BT Sport’s social media feeds.

“He said they were going for 55,  he didn’t even last 55 minutes in that game,” said Sutton on BT Sport’s socials ahead of Celtic v St Mirren, as shown in a clip uploaded to the broadcaster’s Twitter account.

“Oh Darrell don’t hit me with that one are ya, how many times over the last couple of season have we heard it?

“You know we’re going to win the league, yeah Darrell, keep your head down, he was hopeless against Celtic y’know.

“He should be smartly licking his wounds, C’mon Darrell. I believe I can be an astronaut Darrell but it’s just not possible.

“C’mon you can go find 11 people down the pub with belief.”

Lafferty earlier in September in an interview with radio station Cool FM, as transcribed by the Daily Record, shared that the Gers dressing room believe they could rake up 55 league points this season and win the title despite losing to Celtic at the start of the month.

OPINION

It’s harder to find Sutton saying a nice word about the Gers forward than it is a negative one. The outspoken pundit appears to be always slamming or mocking Lafferty for one reason or another and it’s clear that the player’s recent remarks have annoyed Sutton. The pundit believes Lafferty should be licking his wounds and keeping his head down after the Gers’ lost 1-0 to the Hoops as the forward was hopeless during that game. The 30-year-old is no doubt aware he needs to up his performance to help Steven Gerrard’s side achieve success this season but Sutton doesn’t need to mock in the way that he does. Of course Lafferty is publicly going to speak of his side’s belief of winning the league title this season until it’s mathematically impossible, Gerrard and the fans are going to believe there’s a chance until there isn’t. The Gers may have wished for a better start this season, one where they beat their fierce rivals, but there’s no need for them to wallow about the recent defeat as that will do no good.
