BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has slammed Rangers boss Steven Gerrard for his comments on the referees performance in his side’s loss to Celtic on Sunday.

Gerrard was subjected to a 1-0 defeat in his first Old Firm derby thanks to a great effort from Hoops’ midfielder Olivier Ntcham, and Sutton has criticised the way the former Liverpool legend reacted following the game.

“Gerrard ‘the referee cost us’… I thought it was a foul but McGregor should have gone as well! Bottom line Celtic walloped Rangers..Gerrard should have been more gracious and given Celtic more credit,” said Sutton on his personal Twitter account.

Rangers now sit in seventh place with five points following the defeat, whilst Celtic sit in second on nine points after their victory.

OPINION

A first defeat in an Old Firm derby will not be ideal for any manager in charge, not least one who has limited experience in the hotseat like Gerrard has. This most likely explains his reaction to the result, as well as the fact that he did not appear more gracious towards his opponents. He was wrong not to give them credit, as they were excellent on Sunday afternoon. They thoroughly deserved their win, as Rangers did not look up to scratch for the majority of the match. He needs to change his attitude towards these types of games in the future, otherwise he is just going to earn a name for himself as being a sore loser. Yes, losing against your bitter rivals can hurt, but it is not like Rangers were a victim of injustice. Celtic deserve all three points – and Gerrard must learn to live with that as he prepares his team for their next fixture.
