A section of Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to give a mixed reaction to Joe Worrall’s performance as the Nottingham Forest loanee made a surprise debut in the 2-2 draw against Villarreal on Thursday.

Steven Gerrard turned a few heads when he named Worrall, 21, to start the Europa League clash, with Nikola Katic dropped to the bench despite him playing in every game so far this season.

And it was not a good start for Worrall with him being involved in a defensive mix-up inside the first minute that led to Carlos Bacca’s goal.

Some Rangers fans were positive about the centre-back’s performance, however there was one who said that he was “horrendous”.

OPINION

Worrall definitely had a shaky start to his loan spell with Rangers. It took around 45 seconds for him to get caught out for not being on the same wavelength as Connor Goldson when the two Gers centre-backs failed to clear what should have been an easy ball. However the ball hit Worrall and fell to Bacca, who scored a beauty. Since then, Worrall did improve and you can see why some fans were impressed with him. Gerrard should never have started the Forest loanee though. Katic has been quality for the Gers since signing in the summer and resting him for this game was a massive mistake when Worrall had not played a minute for the club. Gerrard should be using cup games and league games against lesser sides to test out new things. For example, it would have been much better to rest Katic against Dundee on Saturday, not in this huge fixture.
