Steven Gerrard is expected to make two changes to his starting line-up when Rangers take on Villarreal as they kick off the Europa League group stages on Thursday night.

Alfredo Morelos will definitely miss out due to suspension while Andy Halliday is expected to be axed and replaced by Ovie Ejaria in the midfield despite a solid performance in the 4-0 win over Dundee on Saturday.

Kyle Lafferty could start up front as a lone striker due to Morelos’ suspension as Gerrard is likely to field a 4-5-1 formation.

Allan McGregor is pretty much nailed on to remain in goals behind an unchanged back-four of James Tavernier, Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson and Borna Barisic, who is now eligible to play in the Europa League for Rangers after representing Osijek in the qualifiers.

Scott Arfield and Lassana Coulibaly are expected to start in the centre of the midfield alongside the returning Ejaria, who was rested for the win over Dundee at the weekend.

Senior midfielder Halliday, 26, is more than likely going to be the man who is axed from the midfield so that the ever-present Ejaria can return.

Daniel Candeias and Ryan Kent could keep hold of their places on both of the wings while Lafferty can be expected to start up front due to Morelos’ absence.
