Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Moutinho has hinted that the club could follow in the footsteps of one of their Premier League colleagues.

The 32-year-old believes that more quality players could be on their way to the Molineux, but has detailed the one comparison he has made to current title holders Manchester City.

He did not rule out the possibility of his side replicating the success of Pep Guardiola’s men, as he reckons that Wolves were just like the way they were ten years ago – but he reinforced how it is more important to focus on the season that lies ahead for them.

“You never know (if we could replicate Manchester City). You never know the future. All the clubs want to be the best club in the world. Manchester City are one of those clubs. Maybe 10 years ago, they were like us,” he told the Express and Star.

“But we need to talk about the reality, the present. If you do a good present, you can be better the next year. You need to focus 100 per cent on this year as it’s very important.”

OPINION

This is a rather bold admission made by the Wolves star, but then again it is good to be ambitious like him. Obviously, at the moment, Wolves are nowhere near the status of Manchester City, and it remains to be seen whether they can replicate what City have in the last few seasons. Achieving what they have is by no means an easy feat, so make an admission as bold on this one is rather bizarre on Moutinho’s part. The fact that he thinks that the current Wolves’ team are like how Manchester City were 10 years ago is also an odd claim to make. Obviously, the team back then were not as half as successful as the team are now, so it is questionable why he would compare Wolves to them. There is no doubting that they are destined for great things in the next few season – there recent form has only reinforced that view – but perhaps Moutinho needs to calm down a bit. As he said, their sole intention should be on their Premier League survival – not comparing City’s previous teams to Wolves’ current one.
