West Ham striker Javier Hernandez is set to be kept out of action for the rest of September as he recovers from a recent bout of glandular fever, according to Claret and Hugh.

The West Ham news website, a reputable outlet who have strong links inside the club, claim that the Mexican international is on the comeback trail and is set to return to training some time this week, but that he will not be available for either the Macclesfield League Cup clash in midweek nor the visit of Manchester United.

Instead, he looks set to return in October, with a Friday night game against Brighton in the first week said to have been pencilled in as his return date.

Opinion

The Hammers have hardly missed Hernandez during his absence but his return to action will at least be a boost for the first team. He is quite clearly a popular figure and it will likely put the likes of Marko Arnautovic and Lucas Perez to up their performances both in training and on match days, or face the axe. The 30-year-old might well consider himself under a bit of pressure too, having failed to live up to expectations over the past couple of months, and for a man who was meant to be the leading figure in the Hammers’ attack, he has been a disappointment. Hopefully for the London Stadium faithful the likes of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko, who appear to have finally bedded into the senior side in east London, can provide him some quality service with their new found form as he looks to make the most of his chances by sticking the ball in the back of the net. However, that time must wait, with fitness the priority for now.
