Former Inter Milan and Argentina hero Javier Zanetti has said that Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is a top quality coach thanks to his eye for detail from the dugout.

The Lilywhites’ boss has been at the helm since 2014, having joined from Premier League rivals Southampton, and has gone on to help the club establish themselves as a regular among the top four as well as a fierce competitor on the European stage.

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s clash with Inter at the San Siro, footballing legend Zanetti, who has a host of trophies and international caps under his belt, said that it was his ability to make the team his own which sets the Spurs man aside from the rest of the managerial field.

Delivering his rave review, he told football.london: “Mauricio is a very well-prepared coach with real attention to detail.

“Both in Spain and England, his teams have always had a really clear identity. He leaves his mark on teams.”

Opinion

It is always nice for a manager to receive praise off a footballing legend but the only way for the Tottenham man to truly prove himself is by getting off to a perfect start against Zanetti’s former side Inter on Tuesday. Things have not gone smoothly for Spurs over the last couple of months, starting with their barren transfer window up to the two successive defeats in the Premier League, including to top four rivals Liverpool. Pochettino needs to get that identity back as soon as possible, for when they were at their best last season no one looked like they could stop them. Unfortunately consistency has been an issue for the manager and that is perhaps the area he needs to address the most. His noted eye for detail might be able to help him, but this is perhaps the first time in a while that the pressure is beginning to properly mount on his shoulders in north London. Could this make or break his career at the club? Only time will tell.
