Many have heralded Manchester City as the favourites to retain their Premier League crown, but it is important not to rule anybody out just yet.

It is only the beginning of the season, and although City have maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign with a win over Newcastle United on Saturday, Tottenham Hotspur have matched them all the way.

However, things often change come after Christmas, and their title chances will only improve thanks to the capture of Ajax midfielder Frenkie De Jong.

According to the Express, Spurs have sent scouts to check out the £40million-rated 21-year-old after failing to secure his signing earlier this summer.

With the Sun reporting that Mousa Dembele could be on his way out in January, bringing De Jong in will come at the perfect time for them.

Dembele was arguably one of Spurs’ best players, and should he depart North London, there will be a gaping hole in the centre of the midfield that will need to be filled.

De Jong is considered as one of the most highly rated talents to have emerged from Holland recently, and he would be the perfect replacement for the Belgian international.

The Lilywhites’ title hopes may have been dashed following the news that Dembele could quit the club, but now they are keen on signing the young ace in January, they will definitely considered genuine title contenders once again.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino was able to retain the services of Dembele over the summer, but the possibility of him leaving in January seems very real now.

He has been one of their most influential players in recent times, but De Jong is more than capable of filling his boots in order to improve Spurs’ title hopes.

Every top team needs a quality midfielder in their ranks, and Spurs look to have found it in the shape of the young Dutchman.

Spurs’ fans must be very excited about the prospect of landing such a maestro – but even more excited about their title chances.
