As has been so widely discussed since the transfer window slammed shut, Tottenham failed to make a single signing as Mauricio Pochettino was forced to stick with his squad for the current campaign – but that could all change when the winter window comes around.

Until the 2-1 defeat at Watford last weekend, Spurs were looking like a dominant force, having beaten Manchester United the weekend previous, and despite their surprise loss against the Hornets, they still sit fifth in the table, just three points off table toppers Liverpool.

With a quiet summer having passed, the focus will now be on picking out and identifying the right targets who are going to make a difference, and with the likes of Moussa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld looking likely to leave – the Belgian pair into the final year of their contracts – a move for a new midfielder and defender is definitely on the cards.

One man linked by Mundo Deportivo with a move to north London over the summer was Ajax sensation Frenkie De Jong, the 21-year-old a breakout star in the Netherlands as a versatile enforcer in both the middle and the defence – and he could kill two birds with one stone by filling both of their places and opening a gap in the squad for Mauricio Pochettino to bring someone else in.

However, the same report from the Spanish publication state that La Liga and Champions League giants Barcelona have made him one of their top two targets for future transfer windows, so Spurs look to be facing a fight for his capture.

Touted for greatness, Spurs would be capturing a real talent if they were to take him to north London, and the fact he is able to fill in two positions which look likely to have vacancies makes it a no-brainer.
