Tottenham eye move for Herrera in next window

|

Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a swoop for Porto central midfielder Hector Herrera in the January transfer window, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian outlet reports on their website that the 28-year-old maestro is also a target for Champions League side Roma, but Spurs are set to challenge the Italians for the signature of the Mexican international when the transfer window re-opens for business in January.

Since moving to Porto in 2013, Herrera has racked up 200 appearances for the Portuguese outfit, and contributed to their recent title win.

Herrera – who stands at 5″9 [Transfermarkt] – was also selected to represent Mexico at this summer’s World Cup.

Good move for Tottenham?

There is no denying that Herrera is a talented and technically adept midfielder – he was outstanding for Mexico at the World Cup – but at the age of 28, he does not really fit into Spurs’ mould at the moment.

Mousa Dembele could move away to China in January, so Mauricio Pochettino could be looking for a potential replacement – but even though Herrera impressed in Russia, he is not a good move for the club.

He has previously earned praise for his work rate in midfield, but he is not the player Tottenham need.

Likely to happen?

With the likes of Roma also challenging Spurs to the signature of the midfielder, it will be a case of who gets there first when the window opens in January.

It will not all be plain sailing to land Herrera, and if they still want him come the window, then they may have to pay a considerable fee for his services, especially after his display at the World Cup.

A move does not seem the most likely in January, so it will remain to be seen what happens with this one – depending on how accurate the report is.
