A section of Tottenham fans have expressed their delight on Twitter after Toby Alderweireld revealed he never wanted to leave the club during the summer.
The Belgium international was strongly linked with quitting Spurs in the recently-shut transfer window amid reported interest from Manchester United.
“Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham,” Alderweireld told Sky Sports. “That’s not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me. So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team. To be in the first team again is a victory for me.

COMMENTARY:
This is a shock revelation from Alderweireld, given that he was widely reported to be on the verge of joining Man United this summer, even up until 24 hours before the window slammed shut. At that point he had been frozen out of the Spurs side throughout the calendar year, and even after he had recovered from a hamstring injury that sidelined him for three months last season. It is hugely satisfying for Tottenham fans that the player never thought he would leave, and his stance that Spurs, in turn, wanted to keep him will also please them. But it doesn’t entirely ring true, as he is out of contract next year and there have been no indications, public or otherwise, that an agreement over an extension is close. If Alderweireld is so keen to stay, why has he not publicly come out and said so earlier this year? Or urged Tottenham to offer him a contract? This just doesn’t really add up.
That’s awesome, Toby. Now sign the new contract, please. https://t.co/6k4QLgp5oA

Shame he didn’t say it at the time.
Regardless of that, great to have him back and playing passionately.— sparrow_jrs (@sparrow_jrs) September 11, 2018
Soothing words, but it doesn’t change the fact that he still hasn’t signed a new deal at Spurs. https://t.co/bi1efbLKYA
