Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier are set to return to the Tottenham line-up for the club’s Premier League clash against Brighton on Saturday evening, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper claim the senior defensive pair will be back in action at the Amex Stadium after being left behind in London as Spurs lost 2-1 to Inter Milan on Tuesday night.

The Standard report England midfielder Dele Alli will be assessed tomorrow after a hamstring problem, while Moussa Sissoko, who has also been suffering with an injury to the same muscle, has returned to training this week.

OPINION

Given that Alderweireld has been Spurs’ outstanding defender this season, there would be something amiss if he was not in the starting XI for a match that has suddenly taken on hugely significant proportions following three consecutive defeats. The Belgian is said to have been left “bewildered” by his omission from the squad for the San Siro, which Mauricio Pochettino claimed was for “technical reasons” rather than due to his fitness. As for Trippier, he has had a mixed start to the season and was very poor against Liverpool last Saturday. He has less reason to quibble after Serge Aurier was preferred in midweek. Yet, the Englishman is a superior player and Spurs’ number one right-back, even if he’s not quite the superstar some of his supporters and media fanboys claim he has become. As for Sissoko and Alli, they would both be in the squad on Saturday if fit. The Frenchman is hardly a favourite among supporters, but his energy, experience and power make him a decent option.
