There has been much criticism of Tottenham’s lack of spending in this summer’s transfer window, but they have already proved that you do not need to spend big to guarantee success.

They currently remain unbeaten in the Premier League, but they are also considered outside favourites for the title this season below the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, there is one thing that boss Mauricio Pochettino could do to ensure that his first team always remain at their best and that is to put Harry Winks on centre stage.

Pochettino must heed the advice of popular Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, who wrote in his Daily Mail column that Spurs will “need to rotate” their squad, which in turn will give Winks the opportunity to break in to the England team.

However, the 22-year-old’s biggest problem is his tendency for injury, and he only needs to improve his fitness to ensure himself of a regular spot in the first team.

He has made three appearances for the Lilywhites so far as a late subsitute, but his place is not assured with fierce competition for the midfield spots.

Nevertheless, Pochettino must listen to Redknapp’s praise of the young ace, and give him more opportunities to start and prove his worth.

He is more than capable of cutting it at the highest level, but he has not been able to show Spurs that he can do that.

The £25,000-a-week [Spotrac] fringe player would shine in the centre of midfield alongside the likes Mousa Dembele, as he would be able to move the ball quickly to ensure a fast, free-flowing attack.

Not enough young homegrown players are given an opportunity in the Premier League for the top-six teams, and this must change in order to benefit the national squad.

Tottenham are known for having top-quality midfielders, and they can carry that trend on my handing Winks the start he deserves.
