Robbie Keane is convinced Tottenham will sign a “couple of players” in the January window after drawing a blank over the summer.

Speaking to betting firm Paddy Power, the former Spurs striker made the big claim that the Londoners will make a big transfer splash in the forthcoming window.

He also explained that he has been told by people who knows high up at Tottenham how close they came to significantly strengthening their team over the summer.

“There have been a few moans that they didn’t make a signing over the summer, but I know first-hand that they tried to sign four players, it just wasn’t meant to be – teams were overpricing players,” Keane told Paddy Power.

“I can understand from the fans’ point of view on that, but if you look at the bigger picture for the last few years, it’s been up and up for Tottenham. If they can buy a couple of players in January, which I’m sure they will, and help the squad, they can have a good season.

“With the players that they have, that’ll attract people as well. They’re a club that’s going to be challenging for trophies, and they’re probably only two or three players off it.”

OPINION

Given that Keane spent eight years at Tottenham in two different spells, it can be assumed his information comes from people in senior positions at the club. Certainly, the Republic of Ireland record goalscorer knows the club inside out and also what an attraction they are to stellar talent. With a magnificent new stadium almost complete and a state-of-the-art training complex that now has its own on-site hotel, Spurs have the off-field elements in place to match a vibrant and exciting team. Mauricio Pochettino’s side has spluttered of late with three consecutive defeats, but they have the personnel to bounce back. Certainly, there is a sense the club missed a trick by not signing anyone in the summer and that wrong should be righted in January, given the healthy financials posted earlier this year. Spurs spent big on Lucas Moura in the recent winter window, and players of similar quality must be recruited if they do indeed sign a few, as Keane suggests.
