Sky Sports pundit Craig Bellamy believes that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is the reason why the club did not make any signings this summer.

Bellamy thinks that any forward being linked with a move to Spurs would shy away from the opportunity, purely because they would be second in the pecking order to the England captain.

While this is true, Spurs and their manager Mauricio Pochettino still need to strengthen their attack to stand any chance of competing for the Premier League title this season.

During two of the last three seasons, Kane has won the Premier League Golden Boot as well as the same accolade at this summer’s World Cup.

However, despite his prolific form in the last few years, Bellamy claims that he is the number one reason why the Lilywhites are not able to add some depth to their attack in the transfer window.

“What some managers might say is ‘you’d be great for him because you can keep him on his toes and if you play and you train better, you’ll get your chance,'” he said on Sky Sports’ ‘The Debate.’

“I (as a striker) ain’t taking that gamble, because I don’t think Spurs fans would accept it and I know the English media won’t accept it. You can’t have your golden boy sitting on the bench, it wouldn’t happen.

“So I know straight away I’m not being held responsible for that because he’s England’s future, he’s the one they’re all pinning their hopes on, he’s the one that gets goals. This is a battle any forward would want to stay away from.”

Nevertheless, at the moment, Spurs could do with an extra player in the attack just to freshen things up a bit and take the burden off their £200,000-a-week [Spotrac] star.

At the moment, Spurs look to the 25-year-old to deliver the goods, but there is always that pressure on him to be consistent season after season.

Soon, that pressure will get to him, and he will not be able to perform as well as he used to – but, if he had another striker who is also capable of scoring on a regular basis, then a significant weight would be taken off his shoulders.

Pochettino must recruit another attacker in the January transfer window – or he will see any chance of challenging for the title go down the drain.
