It is not often that a former player tips a rival club to get one over their old employers.

In Dimitar Berbatov’s case, it is, as the former Tottenham Hotspur striker has tipped Liverpool to take away all three points in their clash this weekend in an interview with Betfair.

“Liverpool have got off to a great start, winning every game and playing good football. The team looks very balanced and it’s going to be very tough for Tottenham, despite home advantage,” he said.

“I expect both teams to score as they usually do in this fixture, but I’ll have to edge towards Liverpool to win it.”

It is safe to say that the Spurs’ faithful will not be pleased that one of their old players has made this prediction – in fact, they will be fuming.

Many believe that Liverpool are Manchester City’s closest challengers for the Premier League title, but boss Mauricio Pochettino will be thinking his side are more than capable of launching a bid to usurp City in May after their promising start to the season.

They even finished above the Reds in the 2017/18 campaign – so it makes no sense for Berbatov to predict a win for Spurs’ top four rivals.

Both teams are evenly matched, but fans would have thought that Berbatov would have opted for a win for his old club, despite the fact that they lost out to Watford in their last fixture.

Berbatov will definitely not captivate himself to the supporters who used to sing his name back at White Hart Lane with his recent match prediction.

Instead, many Spurs’ fans will be raging – and it does somewhat question his loyalty.

It may be just a match prediction, but the fact he has leaned towards a club who would have been his bitter rivals while he was also at Manchester United is rather bizarre.

Typically, he should not hold them in very high regard – but seeming as he has, the former Spurs fan favourite is not doing himself any favours.
