A section of Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at striker Danny Ings’ display in their 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

The 26-year-old netted after a defensive blunder by the Palace defence a minute into the second half to give the Saints the lead in their fourth match of the season.

Southampton had the chance to go 2-0 up after Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka handled the ball in the box, but substitute Charlie Austin had his penalty effort saved by Eagles’ goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

Some Saints’ supporters have drooled over the forward following his display, with one fan heralding how the former Liverpool man is a “shrewd piece of business” by the club.

OPINION

Ings is a shadow of a player that he was at Liverpool, and he has so far scored two goals since his arrival at Southampton. Southampton needed to get a positive result here, and Ings had a few chances saved in the first half that could have put the away side in front. However, some Saints fans have heaped praise on Ings, remarking how he is a player that they have been missing. Southampton have not been notorious for having the best attacking talent, but they may have just found it in the shape of Ings. He has certainly found his feet after being rarely used by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, but he has certainly proved what a good player he is after this match. One fan even tweeted how he is a “shrewd” piece of business for the club – it is hard not to agree with this verdict, as he has shone since being given the chance to play first team football. This is a positive result for Mark Hughes, and the supporters could not be more delighted with their new forward.
