Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez is open-minded to remaining at the club if the terms are right, according to the Chronicle.

The regional newspaper reports on its website that the Spaniard has suggested to the United top brass that he is willing to stay on past the end of the season.

The Chronicle claim that if Benitez’ terms are fulfilled, there is the realistic possibility that he will remain at St James’ Park.

Lee Charnley is said to have held discussions with Benitez this week and the outcome of these were deemed to be of a positive outlook, and it is now his responsibility to convince the Toon boss to stay by striking a deal that he is content with.

OPINION

Newcastle fans will be holding their breath from here on out. The future of Benitez at Newcastle now lies with Lee Charnley, who must negotiate a deal with the Spaniard to which he is content. However, the fact that Benitez has admitted that he is open to staying at the club beyond the end of the season if the terms are right will be music to the supporters’ ears. The one thing that they want more than anything is for Benitez to continue his reign as manager of the Magpies – and that possibility now looks more realistic than ever based on this report. They will have everything crossed that Charnley is able to agree a deal which Benitez is happy with – and if his future is secured as a result, the fans will have one less thing to worry about. Having Benitez as the boss next season is all that matters to the fans, no matter what league they end up in.
