Simon Mignolet will be recalled to the Liverpool starting XI for their League Cup clash against Chelsea on Wednesday night, Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

The Anfield manager revealed at his lunchtime media conference on Tuesday, as quoted by Goal correspondent Neil Jones, that the Belgium goalkeeper will be in the starting XI for the Anfield midweek showdown.

Mignolet has yet to play for Liverpool this season following the summer signing of Alisson from Roma.

OPINION

Mignolet is further off than ever from a return to Liverpool’s best XI but the League Cup throws up an opportunity for the goalkeeper to get some much-needed game time following what has been a personally frustrating start to the campaign. The 30-year-old has played second fiddle to the impressive Alisson and it looks like something he is going to get used to, especially after not getting the late-summer transfer he wanted. Klopp instead sanctioned the exit of Loris Karius on a two-year loan, which meant that Mignolet had to stay as clubs held off on matching his Liverpool wages, which Spotrac report to be worth £60,000-a-week. The experienced keeper spoke out at his frustration, which did not go down well with Klopp, who told him such matters should be dealt with in-house rather than in the media. Nevertheless, the manager recognises the importance of fine-tuning the club’s second-best keeper in case he is needed for the more significant Premier League and Champions League fixtures.
