Many football fans took to Twitter to rave about Harry Wilson following his extraordinary free-kick against Manchester United on Tuesday night.

The Liverpool loanee, 21, helped Derby County knock United out of the League Cup with a 59th minute stunner that was instantly hailed as one of the greatest free-kicks ever.

Supporters of all clubs were in raptures at Wilson’s goal and performance, with comments including ‘wow’, ‘good lord’ and ‘disgustingly good’.

COMMENTARY:

Wilson’s wonder goal at Old Trafford didn’t just help knock United out of the League Cup and left them surveying the debris of a wretched start to the season, it almost broke Twitter. Some goals are so good they are far, far bigger than the context in which they are scored and the meaning they have in a particular match. Wilson’s 30-yard thunderbolt will take its place alongside Roberto Carlos’ 1997 howitzer and Cristiano Ronaldo’s screamer a decade ago as one of the greatest free-kicks in the history of the game. The ferocity of the strike, the swerve, the dip, from barely any run-up of note, was remarkable. Supporters of all clubs, not just Derby and Liverpool, were in awe at what Wilson had produced on the big stage, on live television, in one of football’s grandest arenas. He is an extraordinary talent and, if he produces more performances like last night, the calls to get him into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad will be deafening.
