Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has raved about winger Alexis Sanchez despite him struggling to find his form.

The £350,000-a-week [Spotrac] star forward signed for United in January, but since then he has only been able to muster up just three goals in 21 appearances during the 2017/2018 campaign.

So far this season he has not been able to deliver the goals, but Robson believes that he will still come good, despite the poor run of form since his arrival.

He thinks that a summer without representing his country at the World Cup – he plays for Chile – would have played to his advantage, as it would have allowed him the time get up to speed and work on his match sharpness.

“Sanchez is a top-class player. But we haven’t seen the best of him at Manchester United so far. But I’m sure he’ll get to the top of his game. This summer was the first summer he’s had off for several years, and that should do him good,” he told Goal.

“These first few games of the season are maybe just what he needs to sharpen him up and then hopefully we’ll see the best of him for the rest of the season.”

OPINION

There is no doubting that Alexis Sanchez is an excellent player, but it is obvious that he has struggled to find his form since his arrival. That is a shame, as he was fantastic for Arsenal, and was arguably one of their most pivotal players. He has not been able to replicate that form since joining United, but that is something that he will have to do soon if he wants a long-term future at the club. Remaining inconsistent is not what boss Jose Mourinho needs, and it is crucial that he gets up to scratch soon. Nevertheless, we have not seen the best of him yet, but this may just be the season that we will. If he does, he will lift the team’s spirits once again, and give them the hope that they are capable of competing for the Premier League title. Hopefully having the summer off has paid off for him – otherwise he will be facing a long season on the bench.
