Manchester United are yet to decide on whether they will offer midfielder Ander Herrera an extension on his current contract, according to the Evening Standard.

The newspaper reports on its website that the 29-year-old will be free to speak to foreign clubs come January as he is out of contract at the end of this season.

However, the newspaper also claims that the £115,000-a-week [Spotrac] star can still convince the Red Devils to offer him the extension that he is after, as he is understood to want to remain with United.

OPINION

Even though he is not considered as a part of boss Jose Mourinho’s midfield, Herrera is still a player vital to the club’s cause this season. Their title bid – if there was any – has all but disintergrated, but their top four hopes can be kept alive if they decide to offer a contract extension to the midfielder. In the team’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham recently, Mourinho deployed him to operate in the back three, and seeming as he had not done that before, he embraced the role superbly. He has already stated that he would do the same again if Mourinho asked him to, and such willingness from a player should be rewarded. They will risk losing him if they do not wrap up a deal for him soon, and they must do so before January, when he is allowed to speak to foreign clubs. Nevertheless, Herrera is an important player at United, and it should not take a lot for him to convince them to offer him a new contract.
