Man United struggled to a 2-2 draw with Frank Lampard’s Derby side tonight in the league cup, before crashing out on penalties, and the home fans hated what they saw from centre-back Phil Jones.

Derby showed no fear at Old Trafford and could have scored the opener when Mason Mount played a beautiful ball through the United box, which Phil Jones and Ashley Young decided to leave.

Sergio Romero in the United goal came to their rescue and United took the lead through Juan Mata.

But Derby wouldn’t lie down and equalised through Harry Wilson in the second-half before Romero was sent off for handling outside the box.

Jack Marriott popped up with what looked like a winner in the 85th minute, but Marouane Fellaini scored a last-gasp equaliser deep in injury time.

Derby put all five of their penalties in but United matched them taking the game to sudden death, and it went on until – who else – Phil Jones missed giving Derby an 8-7 win. You can’t say it wasn’t deserved.

Here are the best reactions from United fans to Jones at Old Trafford tonight:

OPINION

United fans were relatively happy with what they saw in the first-half as their team produced some scintillating football. But it all went wrong in the second-half and a really impressive Derby County side took the game to United and got a deserved equaliser. When Romero was sent off the home fans feared the worst and their fears were realised in the 85th minute when Jack Marriott grabbed a late goal for the Championship side. However, you can never write United off and in Fellaini they’ve got a player who might look ungainly, but has broken opposition hearts again and again, with late goals like he the one he got tonight. It was all for nothing in the end though after some incredible penalties from both sides. Poor Phil Jones for United. He came in for some real stick from the home fans, and a large portion of them just don’t think he’s good enough to wear the shirt. Fate would mean that he would miss the crucial penalty as well despite him being the eighth choice to take a spot-kick.
