When your main talisman is suffering with poor form, it would be a major loss to any team, let alone a top Premier League club like Tottenham Hotspur.

Their current run has been far from impressive after three successive defeats in the league and the Champions League, and it does not help that the likes of Harry Kane look rather tired.

Pundits have been criticising him for his lack of form recently, with many calling for the first team figure to be rested in order to get their season back on track.

However, the latest admission made by former Spurs’ striker Robbie Keane is spot on.

He has told Paddy Power that resting the England captain, which has been touted but would be a surprise turn of events, would be a massive mistake on Mauricio Pochettino’s part – and it implies that they are making a statement that they do not want to finish in the top four.

No matter how bold this admission may be, Keane is right – they would only be surrendering a place in the top four if they were to rest Kane.

Their back up forward comes in the shape of Fernando Llorente, who is is safe to say is not capable of netting 20 to 25 goals in a campaign like Kane is.

He is not suitable cover for the situation that the Lilywhites currently find themselves in – and that it is why Pochettino must not rest Kane if he is serious about his side’s Premier League ambitions.

Securing Champions League football for another year is a must, and they will not be able to do that without the presence of Kane on the pitch.

Even though fans will not want to hear it, Spurs are surrendering their place in the coveted land of the Premier League top four without Kane.

“It’s just not going to happen if you leave him out for a few games, because of the goals that he brings and that makes it unrealistic to rest him,” Keane told Paddypower.

A lot of players experience a bad run of form, and that is exactly what Kane is going through right now – it is only because he is one of the league’s best strikers that we are talking about him so much.

Keane has hit the nail on the head with this verdict – and fingers crossed that he is not rested any time soon.
