Jake Humphrey has disagreed with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher on Twitter over Newcastle United.

Carragher had written in a column for the Telegraph how United boss Rafa Benitez must leave the club as it is a “failing institution” – however, BT Sport presenter Humphrey hit back on the social media site by claiming that it is not the Spaniard that needs to depart St James’ Park.

During the exchange, the Anfield legend had the last say on the matter,  maintaining that Benitez is the figure that should leave, as the one who should – implied here as owner Mike Ashley – does not want to sell the club.

OPINION

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and that includes Carragher. However, many Newcastle fans will be up in arms with his latest claim, as Benitez leaving the club is the last thing that they would want to happen. The Spaniard has been a major success on Tyneside, so the fact that a well-known pundit like Carragher thinks that Benitez should walk away will not please them in the slightest. It is hard not to agree with Humphrey here – Benitez is not the one who should be leaving. Many supporters would agree with the sports presenter with this view, and he is likely to get a lot of backing from the club faithful by disagreeing with Carragher. Benitez leaving is not the answer to Newcastle’s problems – but him remaining in the hotseat definitely is. However, it is not surprising that Carragher has taken this view – as he said in his tweet, Ashley clearly does not want to sell if he is not lowering his price.
