Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is ready to turn his back on interest from Barcelona and sign a new deal with the Premier League champions, according to The Sun

The newspaper report that the Germany international is happy at the Etihad and wants to commit his future to the club with a new long-term deal.

The Sun claim that AC Milan also would like to sign the 27-year-old, as do multiple Bundesliga clubs, but Gundogan is ready to turn his back on the big guns to remain in Manchester.

The midfielder still has two years left to run on his £90,000-a-week deal.

OPINION

This is big news for City, and is a development which proves that the club are now on par with some of the biggest in European football. It is not often that players are prepared to turn down interest from Barcelona, and that illustrates the lengths that players are willing to go to play for the club these days. Losing Gundogan would be a blow for the club, with the Germany midfielder becoming a key member of Pep Guardiola’s squad, and tying him down on a new deal is a sensible move. The 27-year-old does however have his work cut out to keep his place in the starting lineup right now, with Fernandinho tending to be the one player who is guaranteed to be selected in a central role. That being said, Pep obviously rates Gundogan very highly, and there should be no trouble in agreeing this new deal now that the player himself is ready to sit down for talks.
