Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is plotting a double raid on AC Milan for their defenders Alessio Romagnoli and Mattia Caldara, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian outlet reports on their website that a deal for both players would be hard to negotiate for the Blues, as Romagnoli has only just renewed his contract at the club and Caldara only arrived this summer.

AC Milan are willing to turn down any offers that could come their way for their star duo, as they consider the two players as the future of the club’s defence.

Romagnoli made 134 appearances for the Serie A outfitsince his arrival in 2015, while Caldara is yet to star for the San Siro club.

Good move for Chelsea?

If they are looking at long term options for the central defence, then the pair would be the ideal solution for the Blues.

Gary Cahill and David Luiz are aging and are not highly considered by Sarri, especially Cahill, who is yet to make an appearance under the new boss.

Nevertheless, with their current defence, Chelsea showed against Arsenal a few weeks back that they are defensively fragile, and this pair could solve that problem.

Likely to happen?

No, not at the moment. With Romagnoli having just signed a new contract at the club and Caladara only just having arrived, a double swoop does not seem very likely.

The fact that Milan are also adamant that they will hold firm to any offers is also bad news for the Blues, as it will make a potential deal very hard to negotiate.

Chelsea will have to offer a lot if they want to nab this pair – although a January swoop for the them is looking increasingly unlikely.
