Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov has leapt to a fierce defence of forward Harry Kane in light of the recent criticism of his form.

The Spurs’ regular has been criticised for struggling recently due to the amount of games he has been playing in the last year, which includes England’s lengthy run in the World Cup earlier this summer.

However, Berbatov has hit back at those slamming the star striker, and has admitted that he cannot see any problems with the way he is currently playing.

He also added that if Kane had a problem with playing a little deeper alongside the reignited Lucas Moura, then he is in the position where he can notfify boss Mauricio Pochettino of his concerns.

“There’s been talk about Harry Kane ‘struggling’ but what do people expect him to do? Fly? I can’t see any problem with the way he’s playing. He’s scored a couple of goals, is still the main man for Spurs and England and he has great quality,” he told Betfair.

“Kane has been playing a bit deeper with Lucas Moura playing as a striker but if he had an issue with that I’m sure he’d let the manager know. He is a position at the club where he is able to do that.”

OPINION

Kane has been criticised a lot recently for looking tired in his performances, which many have blamed on the amount of games he has had to play in the last year. However, Berbatov is right to lead a fierce defence of Kane – any other striker would not be facing the same criticism. Because he is one of the best centre-forwards in the world, it will be noticed more if he is not up to his usual standard – if it were a striker who played for mid table team, not much fuss would be made. As Berbatov points out, there is nothing wrong with the way that Kane is playing – he has been scoring goals, which is his job after all. He may not look up to standard as it is likely that he is adpating to having someone play alongside him, which he is not used to after being used as the sole striker for such a long time.
