OPINION

Newcastle United fans have been furious with how their club has done in the transfer market over the last few years – and the recent performance of summer target Nicolas Tagliafico is not going to help things.

According to the Sun, Newcastle were in the hunt to sign the Ajax left-back in the summer and would have been able to sign him for just £8million.

It would have been a no-brainer for most clubs to splash the relatively small sum on a seriously good player, especially one who is an international for Argentina and plays for one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs.

Well, not Newcastle.

What makes things worse is that Tagliafico had a dazzling performance for Ajax in their 3-0 win against AEK Athens in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The former Independiente flyer scored a second-half brace to secure the Amsterdam giants all three points, and there is no way that he is going to be available for just £8million after that.

What were Newcastle playing at?

They could definitely have afforded Tagliafico and it’s not like Rafa Benitez’s left-back options are that amazing.

Tagliafico would have been a massive upgrade on what Benitez has and his rampant display against AEK at the Johan Cruyff Arena just proves how good of a signing he would have been.

Many members of the Toon Army will be furious that they could have actually signed this player, and they must be more decisive in the transfer market in the future.
