Former Manchester United defender Paul McGrath has leapt to the defence of Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino following the loss to Inter Milan on Wednesday.

Spurs were subjected to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Italians in their Champions League opener, and Pochettino was undoubtedly frustrated that his side had suffered their third loss on the bounce.

However, McGrath has called on Twitter for people to stop laying into him following the result – and has urged those who have criticised the under-fire Argentine to give him a break and let him enjoy the “great future” he has ahead of him.

He wrote on his Twitter account: “Wow, as a sports watcher, I’m amazed at the reaction to Spurs, or should I say this reaction to Pochettino’s latest defeat, so many times you see the mob hungry for someone’s head. This is a young man with a great future, please let him have it. Yours in Sport.”

OPINION

Pochettino has been arguably under-fire recently for the way he reacted to the defeat on Wednesday – but who can blame him. He is obviously frustrated that his side have now lost three consecutive games, so he definitely has a right to be annoyed. McGrath is right to leap to the defence of the under-fire boss – people do need to stop criticising him for his reaction. If anything, the way he responded to the loss shows just how passionate he is about the club and its success – and this is something that many, especially Spurs’ fans, should be applauding. It is up to him to turn their fortunes around, but like McGrath said, Pochettino has a great future ahead of him – and people should just let him enjoy it. After all, Spurs are only in the position they are in now thanks to his guidance – something which people forget far too easily.
