Sky Sports News host Jim White has claimed that it is “good news” for Rangers that James Tavernier has signed a new contract.

The Gers announced on their official website on Tuesday that the 27-year-old right-back has signed an improved deal that keeps him at Ibrox until 2022 after it was reported in the summer transfer window that West Brom had tabled a bid for him.

Rangers-mad journalist White has since taken to his personal Twitter account to delivers his verdict on the news.

“Good news for Steven Gerrard and Rangers tonight – James Tavernier signs new deal at club till 2022,” he said on Tuesday.

OPINION

White is right – it certainly is good news for Rangers. Tavernier is now the Gers’ club captain and he needs to be tied down at Ibrox for as long as possible after he reportedly emerged on the radar of clubs south of the border. The former Newcastle right-back has been the subject of a lot of criticism lately though, especially for the defensive side of his performances. However with the amount of fine work he does in attack, it is always worthwhile to keep Tavernier in the first team, not only for his goals and assists, but also his leadership. Already this season, Tavernier has scored four goals and supplied six assists in 14 appearances across all competitions. How often do you see defenders involved in 10 goals in 14 outings? He is brilliant and the Light Blues fans should be more lenient for his slack defensive work when he does so well in attack.
