A section of football fans have taken to Twitter to lay into Ciaran Clark for his performance in Republic of Ireland’s 4-1 thrashing by Wales on Thursday night.
The Newcastle United centre-back played the full 90 minutes for Martin O’Neill’s side as they were torn apart by goals from Tom Lawrence, Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts.

COMMENTARY:
All supporters – Irish, Welsh, even Newcastle ones – took the opportunity to destroy Clark as Republic of Ireland suffered a humiliating home nations defeat. O’Neill’s side looked bewildered and naive at the same Cardiff City Stadium where they won a vital World Cup qualifying match less than a year ago. As the most experienced member of the defence, Clark must take his share of the blame for a forgettable performance, in which his decision-making and positioning left a huge amount to be desired. Wales took full advantage as Ryan Giggs secured a memorable win in his first match in competitive charge. Clark will hope to put this behind him when he returns to Newcastle, where he has been a key member of their team this season after the shattering injury suffered by 2017-18 mainstay Florian Lejeune. The former Aston Villa man has started all four league fixtures to date, although his performances have been mixed.

@C___Clark You are the worst defender in Irish History. In 17 minutes against Wales, you got outwitted by a teenager and let Bale cut in on his left, which everyone knows you don't. #Ireland #Nationsleague

Shocking from Ireland at the back. Too much space for Allen and Clark caught ball watching. Tom Lawrence thumps it past Randolph. 1 nil Wales after only 6 minutes

As well-worked as they were by Wales, all 3 goals came from attacking the space between Stephen Ward and Ciaran Clark. Two of them beating the keeper at the near post. Defensive horror show from the Irish here. #UNL
