West Bromwich Albion chief executive Mark Jenkins has flown to meet with owner Guochuan Lai over the appointment of a new technical director as their hunt enters the next stage, according to the Express and Star.

The newspaper claim on their website that following the sacking of Nick Hammond and then Giuliano Terraneo from the role over the last five months, the Baggies top brass are closing in on making a decision about who should join to help take the load off manager Darren Moore’s shoulders.

It is stated that while the first team coach and his team were in charge of recruitment over the summer, the club want a permanent fixture to come in, and after speaking to potential figures to fill the gap, are heading into the interview stage of the process with an appointment hopeful by the end of the year.

Opinion

Moore did a perfectly fine job when it came to recruiting some talent for the first team squad this summer, and it has had the desired impact out on the football pitch. However, Jenkins is right in deciding to keep pursuing a new technical director, simply because their breadth of knowledge and contacts will likely be far in excess of what the manager has to offer. Whoever it might be, they will have to work alongside Moore to make sure that they are on the same page when it comes to new signings, and a lot of that could depend on what sort of position the club are in heading into the January window. If they are pushing for promotion, then it may be a case of one or two quality signings not only to boost their chances of a top six finish but to help their side if they were to seal a place back in the Premier League. However, if they are below target, then it could be a much busier month as the Baggies conduct big changes to get back on track.
